Pete Loewen is the founder and owner of Loewen and Associates, Inc. He grew up on his family’s grain production and commercial cattle feeding operation in western Kansas. Pete graduated with Cum Laude honors from Kansas State University in 1993 with a degree in Animal Sciences and Industry and jumped right into the ag brokerage/analysis business. Pete has a wealth of experience in commodity brokerage and price risk management consulting. Grain and livestock futures market and fundamental analysis is Pete’s lifelong profession. Prior to starting Loewen and Associates, Pete’s professional career involved being a partner and member of the board of directors at two different professional agricultural risk management firms. The first firm specialized in commodity futures and options brokerage and grain / livestock consulting. The second firm focused on ag business management and ag business startups. Pete’s focus at the second firm was building a brokerage and consulting business focusing on ag producer and end user commercial services. Pete is a licensed broker and grain and livestock analyst. He started Loewen and Associates, Inc. in 2006 and later added Matt Hines, Doug Biswell and finally Matt Burgener to the team. Focusing on building company personnel based on specialized knowledge and expertise; Matt Hines was added for his producer and commercial merchandising, logistics, basis and consulting skills, Doug Biswell for his producer consulting, basis and merchandising skills and Matt Burgener for his ag production and grain marketing background. Together, they have serviced accounts and customers from coast to coast in the US and from Canada to Mexico.
Matt Hines rejoined Loewen and Associates in August 2007. Matt graduated from Kansas State with dual degree in Agricultural Economics and Milling Science & Management. After graduating, he began his career as a grain merchandiser for ADM/Growmark on the Illinois River in Beardstown, Illinois. Matt then moved back to Kansas and joined 21st Century Grain Processing Cooperative as a grain merchandiser in 2001. We say he “rejoined” Loewen and Associates because from 2004 to 2005 he was also with Pete Loewen as a licensed broker, commercial grain consultant and grain analyst. Matt spent the next 5 years as the grain merchandiser for Farmers Union Coop in St Marys, Kansas, followed by a year as the grain merchandiser for Farmers Coop Elevator in Sabetha, KS and 2 years as a grain and feed merchandiser with Tallgrass Commodities. Matt is now full time with Loewen and Associates primarily focusing on grain operations and commercial consulting clients. Matt resides outside Holton, KS with his significant other Sara and their 5 children and a small cow/calf operation.
Doug Biswell is a native to the Kaw River Valley, having grown up in St Marys, Kansas. Doug graduated from Kansas State University in May of 1989 with a Degree in Business Administration. He started his business career as a loan officer for a local credit union and then moved into agriculture, working as the grain merchandiser for the Farmers Union Coop in St Marys, Kansas. Doug has been a licensed commodity futures and options broker since 1998. He has held the merchandiser position for several Kansas Coops and spent five years as a grain originator for Cargill in Topeka. He is currently the grain merchandiser with Nemaha County Coop, which markets grain at eight elevator locations throughout northeast Kansas. Doug works out of Nemaha County’s main location in Seneca, Kansas.
Doug joined the Loewen and Associates team in March 2009 as a risk management consultant and broker, while still maintaining his position with the Coop. Doug is a valuable addition to the Loewen team because of his cash market knowledge and risk management skills. His philosophy is to strive to get to know as much about each individual customer’s operation as possible, to better help those producers manage their price risk. He, his wife and four children reside between Rossville and Silver Lake. livestock running around as well.
Matt Burgener grew up on a grain and livestock farm in Moweaqua, IL in the heart of the Corn Belt. Matt began working with his dad on the farm in 1993 and took over the operation in 2000, expanding it over the years. Always striving to be a student of the market and looking for a better advisory service, he came to Loewen and Associates in January 2011 as a client. Recognizing how greatly the service’s philosophy had helped him and seeing the need for better producer education, he joined Loewen and Associates as a consultant and licensed commodities broker in March 2015.
Matt brings experience as a producer, knowing many of the challenges customers face daily. Utilizing his knowledge of the cash market and price risk tools, his goal is to help producers through the service to become better educated marketers and risk managers.
Matt lives in rural Moweaqua, IL with his two daughters, just south of Decatur. He runs a no-till corn and soybean operation in Shelby County. He also helps his girls with their show swine operation, selling and showing pigs all across the U.S.
